Time: 10 mins.
Task: For the four most recent additions to the periodic table (Elements 113, 115, 117 and 118) suggest possible physical and chemical properties using your knowledge of periodic trends (assuming they could be made in a stable form).
Task: For the four most recent additions to the periodic table (Elements 113, 115, 117 and 118) suggest possible physical and chemical properties using your knowledge of periodic trends (assuming they could be made in a stable form).
Extension: If the elements of Group 18 are extremely stable and exist in a monoatomic state, why can element 118 only last a fraction of a second before decomposing?

Task: Obviously, the names and symbols of elements must be distinguishable from each other. The town of Ytterby in Sweden (specifically its mine) is famous for having 4 elements named after it. 1 is found in the d-block and 3 are found in the lanthanoide part of the f-block. Which country is the town in and what are the 4 names?
Extension: Which element is named after the capitol of the country above and which element after the discoverer of the d-block element?

Activity 3 - How responsible are scientists for the use of chemical weapons?Subtopic 3.2 - Periodic trends
NOS statement 4.5 - Scientists often work areas, or produce findings, that have significant ethical and political implications. (Chemical weapons)
Time: 10 min.
|
Task: On a scale of 1-3 (1 being strongly disagree and 3 strongly agree) rate the following statements on the development of chemical weapons:
- Scientists are unlikely to know the potential uses of their research.
- Governments hold full responsibility for the use of chemical weapons.
- Scientists should be aware of the potential future uses of their research.
- Research into areas that are likely to be used for developing weapons should be illegal.
- Scientists are partly to blame for the harm caused by chemical weapons.
Extension: When chlorine gas is inhaled, one of the significant causes of harm is its reaction with water. What products are formed? Can you represent this as a balanced equation?
